As a volunteer, you are agreeing to complete tasks for seniors through the Befrienders Lend-A-Hand Task Force. Please initial if you agree and permission is given for each prompt below.
Befrienders will only share volunteer information with the senior whose task you have been assigned. As a volunteer, we ask that you also maintain the confidentiality of our seniors and keep their information private. The volunteer and senior are responsible for coordinating a time to complete the task. We ask that the volunteer contact the senior within 24 hours of being assigned a senior task. To foster friendships between volunteers and seniors, we encourage conversations.
It is vital that the volunteer arrives on time to the appointment that has been coordinated between the volunteer and the senior. In the event that a volunteer is unable to make the appointment, we ask that the volunteer contact the senior as soon as possible to reschedule. If the volunteer cannot reschedule, we ask that the volunteer contact Befrienders, and we can arrange for another volunteer to take on the task.
Seniors are responsible for paying for any fees associated with the task, such as dump fees, light bulbs, batteries, etc.. The volunteer is responsible for providing the senior with a receipt indicating that the volunteer paid the costs associated with the task and needs to be reimbursed by the senior. Volunteers cannot accept payment from seniors for Lend-A-Hand tasks. If seniors request to pay for the service, we ask that the volunteer direct them to make a donation to the Befrienders Lend-A-Hand program to enable more volunteering opportunities for other seniors.
Befrienders is not liable for any damage or injury that may occur while volunteering. The volunteer assumes all foregoing risks and accepts personal responsibility for any personal damage or injury to themselves.
We ask volunteers not to do any task that may cause injury to themselves. Befrienders want to keep our volunteers safe and in good health. If a volunteer believes they are not physically capable of completing a task, please get in touch with Befrienders, and we can arrange for another volunteer to take on the task.
Lend-A-Hand Volunteers are not allowed to drive the senior they are performing a task for. Current Befriender volunteers who have been vetted and have signed the driving agreement can request a waiver from the Befrienders’ Executive Director that would allow them to drive the Lend-A-Hand senior.
We require the volunteer to call/text us within 48 hours of completing the task. We are looking for feedback on the process, the task, and your interactions with the senior.
We encourage volunteers to email/text us photographs of Lend-A-Hand activity for promotional use (promoting the Befrienders Lend-A-Hand program to enable more volunteering opportunities for other seniors). In sending Befrienders photos, we will assume you are giving us permission to use photos for promotional purposes. If the senior is in a photo, we also request permission from the senior to use their image for promotional purposes.
Volunteers are welcome to bring a ‘Buddy’ (this includes a family member or friend) to help complete the seniors' tasks. Befrienders ask that volunteers notify us if they plan to bring a ‘Buddy’. We require the ‘Buddy’ to sign a Volunteer ‘Buddy’ Agreement knowing the lead volunteer will accept personal responsibility for the ‘Buddy’.

Criminal Background

A background check currently costs Befrienders $20.00. A donation on the part of the applicant to help defray this cost would be greatly appreciated, though not required.

Because I will be working with older adults who may be vulnerable, I understand that it will be necessary for Befrienders to conduct a criminal background check. I hereby grant Befrienders and its agent, ClearStar Services, permission to do so. I authorize all law enforcement agencies and references to provide the necessary and relevant information about me to Befrienders and I release them from any and all liability as a result of providing that information. I hereby declare that all of the information provided in this application is complete, true and correct to the best of my knowledge.
